I have the same problem with NM since 8.10. Some days ago I tried to setup my UPS using the "megatec_usb" driver through out nut, so I discovered this commands:

sudo udevadm control --reload-rules
sudo udevadm trigger

It reloads the udev rules and NM shows that I'm connected to a wired network using eth1.

I'm using Jaunty
