After some time working with my machine, the nm-applet disappears. When I launch it via terminal the icon in the top bar reappears but gives the following errors:

 michael@michael-laptop:~$ nm-applet

** (nm-applet:18107): WARNING **: nm_client_get_devices: error getting devices: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

** (nm-applet:18107): WARNING **: nm_client_get_devices: error getting devices: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

(nm-connection-editor:18118): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_hash_table_foreach: assertion `hash_table != NULL' failed
** Message: nm_connection_list_new: failed to load VPN plugins: Couldn't read VPN .name files directory /etc/NetworkManager/VPN.

(nm-connection-editor:18118): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

(nm-connection-editor:18118): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_destroy: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

** (nm-applet:18107): WARNING **: nm_client_get_devices: error getting devices: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

Additionally when I left click onto the nm-applet icon it just says

NetworkManager is not running...

although I am connected to the Internet (Firefox and Transmission still work).

regards
Michael

same here.

i tried to set /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf "manage=true", but that didn't seem to improve anything. in fact, after this change my wifi was down and stayed down until i reset the previous change.

nm-tool doesn't launch since 'apparently' no NM is running. nm-applet produces the following:

user@ubuntu:~$ nm-applet &
[1] 7514
user@ubuntu:~$
** (nm-applet:7514): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

(nm-applet:7514): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

[1]+ Exit 1 nm-applet

and if nm-applet is killed first:

user@ubuntu:~$ nm-applet &
[1] 7557
user@ubuntu:~$
** (nm-applet:7557): WARNING **: No connections defined

** (nm-applet:7557): WARNING **: nm_client_get_devices: error getting devices: The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

nm-applet panel icon is gone, but:
$ ps -ef|grep Netw
root 5285 1 0 11:41 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
root 5299 1 0 11:41 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nm-system-settings --config /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
root 5761 5285 0 11:41 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhclient -d -sf /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf /var/run/dhclient-wlan0.pid -lf /var/run/dhclient-wlan0.lease -cf /var/run/nm-dhclient-wlan0.conf wlan0

after suspend/resume, the wireless connection no longer works (it did before!): have to reboot.

how do I get it back? I loved that signal strength icon:-(

got NM to run again, yet "device is unmanaged".

to get NM running check whether you have old versions of libnl* installed in /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=739056)

for the unmanaged device problem i have no solution yet. nonetheless https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/191889 has been suggested.

to get the devices managed, do as follows:

open the file
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-setting.conf
and set
manage=true

after performing the solution from the previous comment and this one, i got my NM .7 (intrepid) running again and connection to any desired network.

I don't think this entry relates to a bug in NM. Rather settings on the user's computer cause NM to malfunction. By following the steps in this report (and the link therein) one should be able to get NM up and running again, without much effort.

/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-setting.conf
should have been be
/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf

(i.e. mind the "s" in settings)
