Bug Description

Testing 8.10beta.
Plug n phone, select "auto mobile broadband" in NetworkManager, and after a few seconds, system freezes completely. (not just X)
Using Nokia Symbian phone via USB, loads cdc_acm module. On Thinkpad X40.
Get "bad CDC descriptors" in log, but its always been that way.
I can successfully get a 3G internet connection using pon/pppd .

ii network-manager 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0 network management framework daemon
ii network-manager-gnome 0.7~~svn20081020t000444-0 network management framework (GNOME frontend)

NM still hangs the PC after update to 27-7 kernel.

The same thing happens with me on Intrepid (i.e. works fine with pppd, but network-manager freezes the system). FYI I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 1GB, connecting via PPP with a Telemodem Z020.

OK, done. Not sure if it will help a kernel problem? Do you need some sort of kernel trace?
It hangs a second or so after "LCP terminated by peer".
Does NM load any modules into the kernel? (that are not used by pon/pppd)
Why would the machine crash from NM while pon works? Different options to pppd?

I was able to repeat this using the same phone on a totally different laptop running 8.10beta (not updated).
Again, the OS is crashed/hung. Different phone on same laptop was OK.

I tested with an old SonyEricsson, and it worked OK, but
- NM showed duplicate menu items - two identical choices for GSM modem.
- does not add default route if I already have a wifi LAN connection. (I think it should.)

The Nokia 6120c is a very popular 3G symbian phone.
Also, my E220 USB 3G modem is not detected by NM on the updated laptop,
though it did work with 8.10beta. The kernel etc. detects it correctly.

this is a duplicate of bug 292195 ... as a workaround you can override your /etc/ppp/options lcp-* settings (set both to 0) read the master bug

sorry ... the real master bug is bug 268667 ... the other was a dupe in itself ;).

Alexander,
NOT a dupe.
Changing those values does not stop my system crashing. Why does it look like a duplicate? Bug 268667 does
not report a total system hang.
Another user reported that he used the same phone, and was prompted for the carrier. Why don't I get that?

BTW, my Nokia 6120 also has the latest generic firmware.

Since this happened on BOTH my laptops, I'm trying to figure anything they have in common, aside from the phone,
that makes me get a crash, but not most other people. (apparently)
They were both installed from the beta CD, and one upgraded. Any chance a fresh install from the official release might fix it?

But whatever changes are made in NM, there must still be a nasty bug in the kernel to allow this. Has a bug been filed against the kernel PPP code?

well ... might be that the hang is something different, but i think that this hang will go away when you can properly connect using the fixes in the other bugs.

If this bug intention is to track a complete system hang, then this is not a dupe, but this isnt a network-manager bug. Please undupe and reassign to the linux package if thats the case.

More info:
As suspected, this bug does not show on a system installed from the official 8.10 release CD.
It was a problem with the beta release, but more significantly, it did not go away after upgrading.
So I guess there is a problem with the upgrade scripts. Maybe just least leaving bad config data.

And of course, whenever the system crashes, there must be a kernel fault.
Feel free to close this bug, but I'm not convinced its a dupe.
No work-around was needed, aside from a clean install.

I can 100% confirm what Mike Holland just wrote. Had this problem (totaly system freeze) after upgrading, problem now gone with clean install. Do not believe it is a dup.

I can report this specific bug (a total system hang related to network-manager together with 3G) with Intrepid Ibex (Updated from Hardy). Don't think its a dup.

I can connect fine using my ZTE 628 UMTS Modem, the connection works for a long periods. However, there are cases that when the connection drops (indicated by the network-manager icon trying to reconnect), the systems freezes and needs a shutdown.
