terdon: i don't think your problem is the same as this one. The system may need network to be running to work, but that's not the same kind of network; this one is called 'lo' and is started automatically without NetworkManager running.
Please open a new report, it will be easier to debug. BTW, you can try 'killall nm-applet' to stop the applet, if that's the problem...
