i hate it when this happens ... i played around a bit and opted to delete all stored keys/passwords from the keyring regarding the WLAN settings. Then forced a reboot, connected to the WLAN network. It seems that now it Does indeed work as expected again.

I'll keep an eye out on the matter and see if the problem crops up again, but for now it seems that it somehow started working.
