even though this bug is about driver issues, please check whether latest NM PPA packages (0.7 final) https://edge.launchpad.net/~network-manager/+archive work around more cases where your driver takes too long.

Note that currently nm and nm applet (as well as a respin of gnome-main-menu) are upgraded for jaunty and intrepid in the PPA ... VPN plugins will follow the other day.
