I couldn't find the messages in /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog (or any of the gzip files). I've installed the hardy-beta updates from today (24 March) which included network-manager files. Now everything shuts down cleanly and I only see the ubuntu graphic and progress bar. It looks as though the network-manager patches have sorted this issue (I don't know what issues the patches were fixing). Is there a way to turn off the usual shut down graphic so I can check the warning messages aren't just being hidden by the graphic.

Thanks.
