The linux-backports method does not work for all cases. It is an updated version of the iwl3945 driver, 1.2.26 instead of 1.2.0. This method does not work for everyone though and it did not work for me. The ndiswrapper solution was the best one I came up with so far. Perhaps when the driver has matured a little it will work as well as the ipw3945 did.
