@lukas-d: I understand, but perhaps you are thinking that I work for Canonical or that I have the skill to contribute to the network-manager project. Neither of those things are true. I am a frustrated user (with fairly low programming ability).

It seems to me that switching to a distribution that is not Ubuntu and is not based on Ubuntu might be an idea, in your circumstances.
