I am having the same problem on Ubuntu 16.04. I am NOT using VM.
On syslog:
avahi-daemon[1264]: Withdrawing address record for 192.168.0.101 on enp2s0.
avahi-daemon[1264]: Leaving mDNS multicast group on interface enp2s0.IPv4 with address 192.168.0.101.
avahi-daemon[1264]: Interface enp2s0.IPv4 no longer relevant for mDNS.
Also running ifconfig shows that enp2s0 has no ipv4 address.
Trying sudo ifdown enp2s0 gives:
Unknown interface enp2s0
So far I have been able to fix this in xfce by going to Settings -> Network Connections,
selecting wired connection and deleting it. This did renew the connection instantly.
I also managed to renew it in UNITY by right clicking network icon on taskbar(?) and disabling network and then enabling it again.
