Stupidity kicking in... point c) above: my "fixwifi.sh" script which I used to unprobe and re-probe the ipw3945 driver had associate=1 set as a parameter. (DOH!)

I was probably seeing the association because after suspend (which _should_ work with ipw3945), the wireless often stops working, or the regulatory deamon exits and it all needs re-loading, and I would run this little script.
