I got same problem in Ubuntu 10.10.
When I imported xxx.ovpn which is openvpn settings. It read wrong tls-auth direction. In the xxx.ovpn file:
tls-auth ta.key 1
and the command line generated by nm-openvpn is:
--tls-auth /opt/etc/vpn11/ta.key 0
mine version is:
Source: network-manager-openvpn Version: 0.8.1+git.20100810t173015.1711d04-0ubuntu1
This bug block me to connect the openvpn server I used, and spend me a while to find out what is really wrong here. So, please fix this bug. Thanks.
