Same problem here. I'm behind a firewall and a proxy. The proxy only could only be reached by the default gateway. IMHO network-manager-openvpn should only change routes when routes are pushed. I only push one dedicated route and I need my original default gateway. I've tested all this with the GUI's on Windows and Mac - all behave correct but network-manager-openvpn does not.
