I'm using the latest version from ubuntu intrepid and i'm experiencing a problem which could be conencted to yours --> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-openvpn/+bug/279597

for me it seems like network-manager-openvpn is always setting the default gw to 0.0.0.0 when using tap devices.
