Bug Description

Binary package hint: netbook-launcher

After install of 9.10 (karmic) netbook remix I received some error windows wich immediately disappeared again (could not read anything). Desktop is completely empty, there are no menus in the top menu line (only the ubuntu logo, but it does not work), there is not even a context menu on a right-click on the desktop. The right-hand topline icons do work (shutdown etc., date, network, battery, volume, letter icon).
Log files reveal a "segfault error 6 in libc-2.10.1.so" during startup of netbook-launcher (2.1.12-0ubuntu3).
Manually starting the netbook-launcher in a terminal window also results in "segmentation fault".
The error windows do not appear on subsequent reboots, but desktop and menus are the same. I tried reinstalling the whole system using another usb-creator tool, but without any success. I also tried to reinstall netbook-launcher and update some libraries which seemed suitable to me (I could not find the exact name libc-2.10.1.so), without success either.

Some further information:

- when using the netbook remix in live session mode I don't get any menus/icons either, but I do get a decent error message saying "sorry, netbook launcher closed unexpectedly".

- It is a dual-boot system with xp and UNR.

- I can get icons on the desktop and a desktop right-click context menu if I change the nautilus settings in the gconf-editor (icons: /apps/nautilus/desktop/computer_icon_visible [ON], /apps/nautilus/desktop/trash_icon_visible [ON] etc., context menu: /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop [ON]). I still have no left-hand menus (main menus) on the top menu bar.

- In the gconf-editor, the netbook-launcher contains only a folder "favorites" with the contents "cheese", "empathy", "evolution", "firefox", "ubiquity", "ubuntuone-client-applet", "ubuntu-software-center", "yelp". Each of these elements consists of the two entries "desktop_file" and "type". These entries seem correct to me (example for firefox: /apps/netbook-launcher/favorites/desktop_file [/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop], /apps/netbook-launcher/favorites/type [application]), but when highlighting them the key documentation shows an exclamation mark and states: This key has no schema. The referenced desktop files exist in the specified path.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

As requested by Didier I tested the lucid lynx (netbook) live environment on the same hardware and could reproduce the bug. (I did not succeed with the desktop version as requested as I could not find the netbook launcher there - suppose it does not have one.) I will be happy to further support your work (e.g. further testing) if necessary.

Seeing same issues. Was a UNR cd I burned about 3 or 4 weeks ago -- old laptop, maybe, 1999-2000 -- dual boot w/ XP & Win2k3 Server. Micron Transport GX+ is the make/model. Not much more I can offer than OP has submitted.

From today's image, UNE lucid has some kind of fallback for card not compositing, can you give it a try, please?

Sure, but could you please give me a hint where I can find today's image
of UNE/UNR? All I could find by now is today's image of the desktop
version at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

Thank you,

Carsten

Oh sure, you'll find it there:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/daily-live/current/

Ensure that netbook-launcher-efl is installed as well.

I think I found it - I'll use
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/daily-live/current/ , right?

Using startup language "german" f***s up the whole screen. It's
completely grey and white with some jaint but magnified logos in the top
menu line. No mouse visible.
Using "english" I get the Ubuntu background. The mouse curser shows the
"busy" icon quite a while, and I end up with only the background and the
mouse cursor, no menu icons, no mouse functionality with either button,
even no menu bar on the top. I cannot even initiate a program with
"alt-F2".

I will check the alpha2 release using language "english" and inform you
if anything is different from the "german" behaviour.

Can you try to uninstall plymouth (booting in rescue mode) and then
try again another boot?
