I first tried the ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates ppa, as suggested by Konsuli, and it didn't help.
I then tried the xorg-edgers/ppa, as suggested by Antti, and it did the trick.
I did a full upgrade, but I assume it was the xserver-xorg-video-intel upgrade that did it.
As this bug is really critical for those affected, I hope the necessary changes from the xorg-edgers/ppa is pushed to karmic-updates soon.
