Well, I guess I spoke out of turn. Cry yer pardon!
I blanked out /etc/network/interfaces as described, leaving just the lo interface.
Then i rebooted (no hang, of course) and logged into gnome. I started nm-applet, and it immediately saw my wireless AP (and a neighbor's). I connected, and it asked me for my WPA-PSK, and here we are! I could never find how to activate wpa in gnome-network-manager...but it was there all along. is this new functionality for feisty?
Guess I should let go of my old ways (like 2 years ago, heh) and see what else I can figure out.
Good work on the workaround, and sorry for my critical tone.
