I have the same problem.

I have SONY VAIO SZ3 laptop with i3945abg wifi adapter

1. Install clean Ubuntu 8.04 beta 4
2. Install nVidia drivers, reboot
3. Everything works
4. Check for updates, and apply all of them (~150), reboot
5. WiFi and Ethernet doesn't work

6. After this I go to System->Administration->Network, switch network configuration from "roaming" to "manual". And enter settings
for wireless adapter (AP name, encryption key etc.), click "Ok". After this "Network" application goes to "busy", but after 5-6 minutes back to normal. Click "Close".
7. Now wireless connection work, except one small thing - "nm-applet" in tray don't show network signal level, just empty "bars"
