But how should a user then know how much free space is on the disc where they
have installed their filesystem (without noticing the free space in every
directory).
/ is mounted in fstab, so it is not that it spans multiple filesystems. You
could also mount something in another mounted directory. Like /mnt/hdc1/hda4 or
something.
Then both hdc1 and hda4 will show up i 'Disks', and the free space is correct,
even if hdc1 'spans multiple filesystems'.
