Further testing in vmware indicates that this is probably a conflict with specific hardware/drivers, since this only happens when I have iso mounted to vmware machine, if I switch over to physical drive (host drive access) it works.

Would be interesting to see what type of drive Bernard was using though. Since it was non-virtual.
