Further info.: both my PPC and AMD64 Hoarys are the Array 7 release.
Following Sebastian's advice, checked the "gnome-window-properties" settings (no
idea how I would've found that through the GUI), and "Select windows when the
mouse moves over them" is unchecked and "Raise selected windows after an
interval" is both unchecked and greyed-out.
Now I find that while this the focus-falling-back-to-desktop is a reproducible
bug across PPC and AMD64 architectures (haven't tested i386 Hoary yet), it seems
to be just a xine problem as Totem Player drops focus back to the originating
window just fine.
