I have the same problem using a relatively recent install of Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.
transferring files from one directory to another on an internal raid 6 setup. The preparing file transfer dialog will come up and then take forever to complete. If I try to cancel the transfer process the desktop will crash (all desktop icons disappear). If I execute the same mv command from the terminal it completes in mere seconds.
