I think it depends on whether myth protocol has changed or not. I have a minimyth frontend which ignores a change in myth protocol and attempts to connect anyway. Other implementations will vary and will likely not enable you to connect if there is a mismatch in the protocol.

I have now been running for over a week with --nohousekeeper switch added to mythbackend. I have not had one instance of it crashing in this manner (kiss of death!!!) This is unheard of for my setup over the last couple of months or so.
