The original my.cnf includes the line

user = mysql

/usr/share/doc/mysql-server-5.0/examples/my-medium.cnf

does not.

Replacing my.cnf with my-medium.cnf permits mysqld to start.

Someone needs to arbitrate the security tradeoffs.
