I run Ubuntu Budgie 21.10. Since two days before turning off display after idle went well (DPMS mode).

Since yesterday turning off display doesn't work anymore. The display goes black for a second but then it comes back again. However, the screen is frozen (no repainting) as long as I use the desktop, e.g. keyboard, mouse movements.

I guess that this is related to a recent update of libmutter. There has been an update (see /var/log/apt/history.log):

Start-Date: 2021-11-17 04:50:38
Commandline: /usr/bin/apt-get -o quiet=1 dist-upgrade -y -o APT::Get::Show-Upgraded=true
Upgrade: libmutter-8-0:amd64 (40.5-1ubuntu2, 40.5-1ubuntu3~21.10.1), mutter-common:amd64 (40.5-1ubuntu2, 40.5-1ubuntu3~21.10.1), accountsservice:amd64 (0.6.55-0ubuntu14, 0.6.55-0ubuntu14.1), netplan.io:amd64 (0.103-0ubuntu7, 0.103-0ubuntu7.1), libaccountsservice0:amd64 (0.6.55-0ubuntu14, 0.6.55-0ubuntu14.1), libnetplan0:amd64 (0.103-0ubuntu7, 0.103-0ubuntu7.1)
End-Date: 2021-11-17 04:50:41

Package: mutter-common
Version: 40.5-1ubuntu3~21.10.1

Package: libmutter-8-0
Version: 40.5-1ubuntu3~21.10.1

Kernel is:
Linux xxx 5.13.0-21-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 19 08:59:28 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Mesa is:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) Iris(R) Plus Graphics 655 (CFL GT3)
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 21.2.2
OpenGL version string: 4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 21.2.2
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 Mesa 21.2.2

System is also an Intel NUC (NUC8I3) but I don't think that it is limited to this setup.

I had a simular problem earlier with Ubuntu 21.04 and Kodi media center (see also https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/19479). I have closed this issue a few days before since I though it was finally solved. This time there is no output when I watch the events by using xev.

The workaround setting MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0in /etc/environment mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1929650 doesn't help.

Edit 2021-11-18 21-25

After further analysis I found out that the root cause isn't any update of mutter. The root cause seems to be my bluetooth mouse. For some reason it prevents the system to go into idle mode altough it hasn't been moved.

Therefore my problem und analysis weren't related to the issue that is reported here.

Sorry for any confusion.
