I have same issue on intel laptop with intel graphics.
But I not use gdm, I use lightdm and x11 session.

Maybe using gdm hides this issue on non-nvidia as gdm starts in wayland mode and then smoothly starts gnome shell.

But with nvidia gdm (or lightdm on intel in my case) starts with x11 mode and then start separate ubuntu x11 session.
