MuseScore Translation problem on Ubuntu Lucid

I remember that I had translated the shortcuts on the translation server, and that translation worked fine with MuseScore version 0.9.6 on Ubuntu Karmic Koala and on Windows XP.
Now with MuseScore version 0.9.6.2 rev. 3400 on Ubuntu Lucid, only the items showed in the column "Action" appear translated: if I select "Edit - Preferences - Shortcuts" (Italian "Modifiche - Preferenze - Scorciatoie") for the item "Add note A to chord" (Italian "Aggiungi nota La all'accordo") the shortcut showed is the English "Shift+A" (version 0.9.6 showed the Italian "Maiusc+A"). Also the buttons "OK Cancel Apply" (Italian "OK Annulla Applica") appear in English language in the "Preferences" window and some other windows.
I check on my laptop with Windows XP and the translation with MuseScore 0.9.6.2 works fine. The MuseScore Windows version works fine also when installed on Ubuntu Lucid via Wine 1.2.

I'm out of the country until late September, so I cannot look at this
until then. I will do so on my return, of course. I suppose it has to
do with the interaction between Ubuntu- and MuseScore-shipped
translations.

Hi Toby,

Possibly same problem was reported by Jiannis for the Debian build.

I checked with Lasconic and the tar which is available on sourceforge contains the latest ts (translation) files. These are the same as the ones used in the Windows & Mac build. So that should not be the problem and we can exclude any other relationship with the musescore.org translation server.

Is it possible you did something special/different when building the 0.9.6.2 release? Perhaps taking the ts files from a different place?

According to the Ubuntu wiki[1], nothing weird happens to musescore (a universe package) during the build process. My guess is that these strings are provided by the Qt packages, which is main. Consequently, the Qt translations are found in the language packs. Do you have the Italian language packs installed?

And Thomas, does Jiannis have translations installed for Qt?

on my Ubuntu Lucid system the selected language is Italian (selected during Ubuntu installation process) and the system is updated.
I'm not a programmer and I'm only a medium Linux user, and I don't know what are exactly the "QT packages" you are talking about: with Synaptic I did a search using "qt" as a keyword and the result has been a very long list, so I'm not able to understand how I can check something about these packages on my computer (perhaps someone is missing?).
One question: I thought that "QT packages" provide the translation of general strings (like the names of the buttons in the dialog boxes), while, on the contrary, I thought that the MuseScore program strings was stored and handled via the specific *.qm file (in this case the mscore_it.qm file). Am I wrong?

I don't think you're wrong.

Here's the theory.. I've subscribed the ubuntu-translations-bugsupervisors team to check it out, because, having installed the French and Italian language packs, it works as expected for French, but not for Italian...

Qt is a framework by Nokia for writing graphical applications. It provides routines for building user interfaces, for example, and comes in the form of a "library". Applications link to this library, so that they can hook in and call useful routines, and draw their interfaces in a similar and coherent way; consequently, the strings used in displaying basic user interface elements will probably be provided by Qt. GTK is another such framework, written in C rather than Qt's C++, and primarily used by the GNOME desktop, as opposed to Qt's usage in KDE.

Doing a search for "qt" in Synaptic will return large numbers of packages: programs using Qt, programs to be used with Qt, programs to help development with Qt, and the various Qt components themselves. You shouldn't have to worry about this, as Qt is provided in the "main" repository, meaning that the strings and translations are stripped out (to make updating translations and translating in Launchpad easier), to be provided in the language packs. (Well, this is how it works according to the Ubuntu Wiki).

Thanks for reporting this bug in Ubuntu translations. However, musescore is in universe, so its translations are not shipped in language packs and cannot be completed in Launchpad. Furthermore, Launchpad only supports the gettext format, and not the qt translation format.

Therefore, I'm marking the translations task as Invalid. Feel free to work with upstream to complete the translations there, which will be used in Ubuntu in the next release of a new package which includes them.

David, I'm reopening the bug, because the query wasn't about the translation of MuseScore, per se - I'm aware of all the things you mentioned, as I noted in my comments - but about the interaction of the translation systems and whether or not some strings are translated in Qt. Could you re-read my comments above and possibly help out about what's going on, and whether or not the bug should be reassigned. It's hard to pinpoint where this is occuring.

(Specifically, the translations *are* complete upstream, but seem to regress when installed in Ubuntu; other platforms do not display this problem, even when the build process and resultant binaries used are the same.)

I did not close the bug, I simply marked the ubuntu-translations task as
Invalid, as the issue is affecting the package. As it is a universe
package, there is nothing we can do to fix the translations in language
packs, so this is rather something that needs to be fixed in the
package.

We can leave the translations task open, but it will not make any
difference. There is a task already for the package, so that the package
maintainers can have a look at it.

I did read all the comments before posting mine, but the answer is the
same. As per what's exactly going on, we need a bit more detailed info.

You are mentioning that translations are complete upstream, but you are
not mentioning any versions. Looking at the following files on my
system:

$ dpkg -L musescore-common | grep locale/.*_it
/usr/share/mscore-0.9/locale/qt_it.qm
/usr/share/mscore-0.9/locale/mscore_it.qm

Neither of them are complete (but very close to completion). These
correspond to the 0.9.6.3+dfsg-0ubuntu1 version of the musescore-common
package in Maverick.

As the original reporter is mentioning Lucid, could someone please check
the status of those translations in Lucid and compare it to the
associated upstream tarball for the corresponding version?

Also I'm not sure why the qt_* translation files are shipped. I'm
assuming the translations are shipped with the qt package already?

From MuseScore version 0.9.6 to 0.9.6.3 I translated only 3 or 4 new strings (and fixed other 7-8 strings).
On my Ubuntu system I have also overwrited the original "mscore_it.qm" file with the "mscore_it.qm" file from my Windows laptop (MuseScore works fine ther), but the situation is the same.
I hope this will be usefull.
