Looking through the berlios topic and my logs, it is indeed the same problem (not sure why mplayer always launches mplayer with -vid 0 on first play). I was using medibuntu's mplayer (version 1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1+medibuntu1) but I believe it's also in the stock ubuntu version (haven't tried - whoever's interested, get a random mkv file and re-mux it so that video isn't the first stream, then play it by running mplayer -vid 0 file.mkv ).

I've since moved to Ripp's mplayer-coreavc> https:/ /launchpad. net/~ripps818/ +archive/ coreavc which is a fresh build which incorporates an upstream fix - see this bug-report> http:// bugzilla. mplayerhq. hu/show_ bug.cgi? id=1814
