Thank you for this bug report. I have subscribed the MOTU Media Team since they are the original packagers of mplayer in Ubuntu. I have also noticed that the same package in Debian does not have a dependence on ttf-bitstream-vera.(http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/mplayer.html) Perhaps it is wise to remove the dependency.
