Maybe it made sense back then, but now if we continue to use the same versioning scheme, any version numbers are just going to be arbitrary numbers. Right now the major changes are in the C API and not so much the javascript version (which has moved to the ES standards as far as I can tell.), so really it makes more sense to version the library after Firefox version than the Javascript version.
