in general this works. if you run gnome, then install the thunderbird-gnome-support package and configure your preferred browser in gnome preferred applications dialog.

if you are not on gnome use the preferences from https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mozilla-thunderbird/+bug/363577/comments/14
