Yes changing the font helps. I see this only with the font "variable width" which is the same as "serif".

I do transfer my profiles, but the bug is seen BEFORE I transfer anything. I noticed this issue on 3 different computers.

1. IBM T40, 1400*1050, ati mobililty9000, xorg drivers
2. intel e2160 desktop, 1900*1200, nvidia gso9600, default drivers
3. HP G70, 1440*900, intel 4500m, default drivers

Don't think it has anything to do with the res or drivers. I've also tried enabling/disabling compiz. Same.
