I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 with Thunderbird 31 and I can partially confirm this bug.
What is working:
-) Mount an samba-share with Nautilus
-) Compose a message in Thunderbird and CLICK ON THE ATTACHMENT BUTTON
-) The samba share should be visible on the left (but it might be in a different order compared to Nautilus as there is no seperate "Network"-item.
-) Browse to the files you want to add.
What is not working:
-) Mount an samba-share with Nautilus.
-) Compuse a message in Thunderbird and DRAG AND DROP A FILE from the mounted Samba-share in Nautilus into the compose windows
-) A link smb://name of sambaserver/path to file appears in the message in Thunderbird, but Thunderbird is unable to send the file.
I don't know if this is a bug in Thunderbird or Nautilus, but I don't think this issue can be closed.
Somebody refers to "~/.gvfs/smb\" but I think the mounting changed since that comment. Now it can be find in /run/user/uid/gvfs/smb-share:server=X,share=Y, where uid can be 1000 and X and Y have other values.
