It seems that either bum (boot-up-manager) or rcconf or jobs-admin fiddled with the file names in /etc/rc[0|6].d/ in a way that all links started with "S03". After restoring the appropriate order the umount scripts are called _before_ the halt|reboot script.

As a side note: backintime works as expected.
