were any of the plugins auto updated? ubufox or gnome-firefox (the integration package for firefox with gnome) maybe? any functional plugin update might cause the plugin database to be updated.
when I get home I'll try installing something like flash and see if it causes a crash. I'm going to copy the plugin database and if it crashes after installing flash I'll compare the before and after copies which should let me know if firefox successfully edits the database.
