@James Brierley, I suggest you use SSH over WiFi.

You don;t need an 'OTG' USB cable, and you just use the keyboard / mouse on your PC.

at Nexus 7 (Ubuntu) terminal:

    ifconfig

(note the IP address, for wireless)

    sudo apt-get install openssh-server

Then connect from Ubunut PC.
