Bug Description

Installing the gnome3 desktop environment on oneiric also installs a debian splash screen for grub. This is an unexpected side effect, and also breaks the purple theme of the vanilla boot sequence.

Also quite unnerving to the user. I can confirm that installing gnome (and via the Ubuntu Software Center resulted in my computer showing the Debian splash screen in grub. I have a more concise list of all the packages installed when choosing gnome in my software center history, but I cannot find any good way to export this list to include it here. Instead, I am including my dpkg log from the installation to list all the packages installed.

There is a similar bug for xfce: bug 777618.
According to a comment there, removing the "desktop-base" package should help you.

Thanks, Dmitry, removing the desktop-base package indeed removed the Debian splash screen for me. I'm now only running the gnome fall-back environment (gnome-panel) so I'm not sure how removing the desktop-base package would affect those who want to run the full gnome-shell.
