I have seen this bug several times on a brand new Core i3 540 HP system.

I see messages like these in the dmesg log:

When the GPU "hangs" I can still CTRL-ALT-F1 and login. Sometimes a simple service gdm restart is enough to get me back to work, sometimes I have to hard-reset the machine.
