I fought and lost. I was able to get the fonts back in GoogleEarth, but the speed of the program was unacceptable (for me). There were other manifestations that the "fix" was more of a band aid. Slow Lattice screensaver, Lbreakout graphics problems.
I played with the /boot/config files, the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, switched mesa glx and swx11 back and forth and off. I "upgraded" to Jaunty Alpha, which I felt broke much more than it fixed.
In the end, I backed up what I hope will be everything (that jury is still out) and repartitioned, installed Ubuntu 7.10, then upgraded through 8.04.
A few more twiddles were necessary. I know I had to goof around some more with mesa and the Screen Resolution "mirror" check mark. It was sudden and inexplicable. Everything just decided to work.
I know I'm on another thread stating that the Jaunty upgrade worked. I can't find that post, but would amend it to say it worked until I rebooted.
