Timo: if you need no answer, why ask? :) So here is one: sorry, but what do you expect? In a time when 3D is one of THE big things on the desktop, a bug that makes it impossible to use it will certainly drive people to look for a solution... And it's not just the bling, we are talking about Google Earth, Blender, games, etc. too.
Such a bug is a pain even for a month, let alone one and a half years! Fixed in Intrepid? The last comment on the bug in X.org tracker is from 2008-06-29! Isn't Hardy supposed to be an LTS release?!
But you are right in that maybe the building stuff should have been put under Answers, and just linked from here. Can it be done now, or is it too late?
