Oh well, I was desperately trying to get some last bonus mileage out of this otherwise trainwreckishly bug report, but I agree that this problem was just a specific variant of a generally applicable problem.
OTOH one might even want to go as far as remembering these issues as one item on a list of useful system health checks for a generic Ubuntu system troubleshooting module ;)
