Possible workaround:

Run `sudo dexconf` to reset your xorg.conf. Restart X and try again.

If that doesn't work, open Synaptic and remove all of the nvidia drivers (sans nvidia-kernel-common) and run `sudo dexconf` again. It appears that the NVIDIA drivers and config applet somehow got installed on systems that do not even have an NVIDIA graphics chipset, and the system attempts to boot with an that driver and fails. `sudo dexconf` should reset the settings back to the default for your system.
