However both Main Menu and Menu Editor are running and allowing edits,
so this does not reflect the situation where they "don't cooperate".
Would you like me to try to replicate the error and repeat the above

I have attached the current /home/.config/menus/ as an archive file
"menus0" (which I think is an empty folder), plus the older one that I
had to delete (ie cut and paste elsewhere) menus1. It has preserved a
file called "xfce-applications.menu" which was present when it was
crashing, and a sub folder "gnome-applications-merged" and
"applications-merged" that contain the same named file
"xfce-applications.menu" that previously allowed the programs to work.
I may be jumping the gun here, but I am hoping these extra observations
may help.
