Yes, it wouldn't break things.
Because, even without the patch, systemd still auto-mount the new interface after chroot from initrd. So, on *pre*-6.0 kernels, both new interface (/sys/firmware/efi/efivars) and deprecated interface (/sys/firmware/efi/vars) will be mounted.
The difference that the patch made is mounting efivarfs earlier.
