Same here I only have message received sounds enabled they work sometimes but I only hear crackling other times. It appears to be a bug in pidgin not ubuntu should it be reported upstream?

Cool I can confirm that Alessio. I just opened totem (with no video) and
Pidgin sounds were fine. After I closed totem, however, pidgin sounds are
just crackles. I then opened and closed totem again and the sounds are back
to normal. Very interesting.

I've just tried to disable pulse-audio and use ALSA: now the sounds are fine..can someone try to disable pulse-audio?

I've done a clean installation of Jaunty. With previous versions (8.04 and 8.10) I had no problem with the sound. But now (in Jaunty 9.04) each time a pidgin contact is connected (or emesene or aMSN), or a new mail arrives, there is a noise in the speakers very unpleasant, like a crackling.

This fact not always. This happens at random.

I have all the defaults after the clean installation of Jaunty 9.04.

I really don't think this has anything to do with PulseAudio or ALSA. I had this problem from a fresh install, and I still have it after removing PulseAudio AND ALSA and switching over too OSSv4.

Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote : Re: [Bug 347544] Re: pidgin 2.5.5 and mail-notification sound distortion/no sound

Distortion occurs when the sampling rate and frequency are mismatched.
Resampling can help; see recent tests with PulseAudio's
resample-method parameter (e.g., ffmpeg, speex-fixed-0, etc.) in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf.

Same deal over here on a brand-spanking new Dell Inspiron 1545 running Jaunty - The crackling is terrible, particularly at high volume and, as others have mentioned, during Pidgin join / part audio notifications. Oddly enough, it also seems to happen from time to time when I mute the audio, too.

Opening Sound Preferences and switching everything to ALSA helped for the most part, but then I'm back to dealing with certain applications "stealing" the soundcard and not giving it back up when other apps want to use it.

This sounds like the same issue that I had. I posted a fix for it here (and I'll also post it below the link):
http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/9772

I can confirm this issue.

However, after running the gstreamer-properties tool and setting the plugin to ALSA and the device to the correct one (analog out) I had no issues with any crackling or skipping of the sounds.

I have an HP Pavilion dv4 1028-us with the STAC92HD71B7X codec. Setting the default device to the analog output ("STAC92xx Analog") fixed this issue.

Can anybody else give this solution a try to confirm that it works?

This started when I upgraded from 9.04 -> 10.10. Get very noticeable crackling/distortion on 100% of pidgin sounds. Tried changing sound from Automatic to Alsa in pidgin and got no sound. Unsure if this is due to improper configuration or not. All other sounds on the system are 100% fine - Rhythymbox, Amarok, gxine, vlc, flash in browser.
