Bug Description

Binary package hint: lxterminal

on startup of lxterminal a black rectangle is shown in the upper left corner of the screen. The rectangle has the same size as the lxterminal window. If the lxterminal window is resizing, the rectangle in the upper left corner is also resizing. A short time after resizing the system is freezing.
This problem is reproduceable on 2 machines with ubuntu natty amd64, lxterminal 0.1.9-0ubuntu3.
On both machines the nvidia driver is used.
This bug is also mentioned in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1699412.

I can confirm this issue. Lxterminal draws a black rectangle in the top left corner and resizing causes both of my monitors to flicker.

xterm is working just fine.

Using 'nvidia-current' with an nVidia Corporation G80 [GeForce 8800 GTS] (rev a2).

Im also affected.

Lubuntu 11.04 amd64 on an EeePc 1015PN
Freezes everytime when i try to resize the Terminal (have to restart)
Same blackrectangle behavior as described above.

- lxterminal 0.1.9-0ubuntu3
- nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu1

Not reproducable with a clean Lubuntu 11.04 in a Virtualbox 4.x environment.
When i change to another Terminal like rxvt, everything is fine.

I tried to find a similar bug but launchpad didn't find anything and 2 minutes after I reported it I see someone marks it as a duplicate of this bug. Something is wrong here! :P

It's no problem, I recalled getting the email earlier, finding bugs on LP is
something of a black art :)

Phill.

Same here. Using Lubuntu i386 and the latest nvidia-drivers from the repository (270.41.06). I suspect this is an issue with the latest nvidia driver. But since Ubuntu never updates restricted drivers, you'll have to wait until 11.10 for a new one if you want to use the repository or uninstall it and use the driver from nvidia's site when a new version rolls around.

Just to add on my previous comment: One way to get around this is to have another application open full-screen. For instance, if Chromium is up and I launch LxTerminal, there's a brief flash of black, but then it disappears right away.

I've installed nvidia-current package version 270.41.19 from this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

But issue is still there for xfce4-terminal.

The problem seems to be resolved with a private nvidia driver package (275.09.04).
The author of the ubuntu nvidia driver package was asked to to make an official fix.

Confirming that problem is fixed for 275.09.04.

I've taken nvidia-current 275.09.04 deb package from here:

I went back to nvidia 170 and the problem disappeared.
I'm using nvidia ion and lxde (on ArchLinux)
In addition, the computer no longer hangs when playing flash video and crash vlc

It seems that the bug comes from nvidia driver, invalidating this bug. :)
