Bug appears to still be present in Ubuntu Jaunty. During boot I still see the FAILED message for the loading of the lirc daemon.
However, at least in KDE 4.3's lirc modules (I have KDE4.3b2 installed right now), it works fine (after configuration of the KDE module, of course).
