Sorry, perhaps I was a little unclear. In the end, I installed the two header files after installing the image and image-extra files. So as per the instructions in the page you linked, I installed all *four* files. i.e. "the common headers, architecture specific headers, and the architecture specific image" and "a linux-image-extras package".
I've checked my Ubuntu system monitor, and it says "Kernel Linux 3.5.0-030500rc4-generic", so I presume it's okay now?
