This could be the case, but it never happened to me before 12.10.
I'm using a Quadro FX 3800M and tried drivers 304.*, 310.*, 313.* and 319.* in 12.10 and 13.04 and this error happens quite frequently.
I did notice something that might be of interest. I'm using this laptop (Dell precision M6500) mostly in a docking station with 2 monitors attached. The other day I was working on it without the docking station (just the laptop screen) and it didn't happen at all in that session. Makes me wonder.
Another footnote is flash, this seems to trigger the behavior as well.
