Let me add the following comment from bug #980019:

In fact there are 2 different bugs:

 1. the fact that the GPU hangs in the first place
 2. the fact that the kernel is not able to recover

The first bug is probably in the xorg radeon driver and the second one in the radeon DRM driver in the kernel.
